Community Service Orders and periodic detention as sentencing options

The authors of this study interviewed eighteen District Court Judges and twenty-two Magistrates between February and September 1989. Their object was to obtain, as it were, a "judicial eye view" of the use of Community Service Orders (CSOs) and Periodic Detention (PD). In carefully structured interviews judicial officers were asked to express their opinions upon various aspects of CSOs and PD. What kinds of offences and offenders should attract these dispositions? What attitude do sentencers have towards them and what difficulties do they encounter in their use? Answers to these and multifarious other questions (a list of which is contained in Appendix C) were tape recorded and carefully analysed for the purposes of this report.
