This study has gathered different kinds of data relevant to the use of community service orders and periodic detention by magistrates. In addition to providing descriptive information on the use of these sentencing options over time and the types of offenders who receive them, the data allow for an assessment of the degree to which the sanctions are being used as genuine alternatives to imprisonment. This is a critical question since the attainment of the putative benefits of these schemes depends greatly on their being used in the manner intended by Parliament.
